“In the Darkness” to become first film premiered on Hulu

In a world of increasing technology and decreasing paper, few might expect one of the most technologically progressive industries might be making some adjustments of its own in order to avoid obsolescence.

Among the innovations of  Mattoid Entertainment’s “In the Darkness” is its status as the first film to be premiered on Hulu.

This sort of release has been termed a “digital distribution” and might be the way of the future in the world of cinema.

“Only 10 percent of Americans see a movie in the theaters more than once a month,” said Darcy Lueking, a UNL graduate and second assistant director of “In the Darkness.”

“The theaters are really, really dying. This 3-D thing has come around now and is kicking things up a bit, but I think digital distribution is really going to be the way a lot of movies are released.”

For independent filmmakers, digital distribution offers the potential for both cheaper production and a greater audience, as well as guaranteed release of the film.

“They don’t have to buy all these film prints and spend all this money printing films for the big theaters,” said Lueking.

“The big theaters are traditionally really closed off to smaller movies. You have to go through the system and get your foot in the door that way, but with Internet distribution, basically anybody with a camera and something to say can make a film.”

“In the Darkness,” in addition to being the first film premiered on Hulu, was shot for little cost, in one week and in a wildfire-ravaged area near Palmdale, Calif.

The cast and crew suffered through rain and long, cold days to produce a film cinematographer and UNL graduate Nick Oberlander calls “a feature-length ‘Twilight Zone.’”

“In the Darkness” is, to put it simply, a detective story surrounding the kidnapping of three kids. Yet Lueking described the film as being of a more complex nature.

“It’s a lot more than just a straight-forward detective story,” Lueking said.

“It has a whole supernatural element to it.”

“It has a different visual style to it,” Oberlander added.

Both Lueking and Oberlander are recent graduates of the Film and New Media program in the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Performing Arts.

They became involved in “In the Darkness” after working on a feature film called “April Showers,” shot in Plattsmouth, Neb., by the same director, Andrew Robinson.

Now working in Los Angeles, Leuking and Oberlander have encountered the competitive climate that is the film industry.

Bryan McClure, a Nebraska-native actor who plays party boy Daryl Cooper, said, “It is a highly competitive place, but the more you get yourself out there, the better off you will be.”

Lueking agreed, stating, “Ideally, we could live back in Nebraska so we could work where we would prefer to live, but right now, we have to go where the work is.”
